Friends decide the flavor
The official description is direct: along the way, you will make friends who can join you and impact your story and its ending. Companions who join early can still be with you at the credits, so the people beside you at the end reflect choices made from the first regions onward.
There is no published list of joinable friends, no best companion ranking, and no ending count — the official materials stop at the mechanic itself.
What that means for a first trip
Two players who befriend different travelers can finish different stories. For a first trip, that reads as permission rather than warning: travel with whoever you like, and treat any ending as the one your choices earned. A second trip with different company is a different story, by design.
